Wedowee, Alabama
Wedowee is a beautiful town located in Randolph County, Alabama on the East Central Alabama/West Georgia line. Wedowee was initially incorporated in 1836. Its charter lapsed by the late 19th century; it was then reincorporated in 1901. Wedowee, which means “old water” in the Creek Indian language, was named after a Muscogee Creek Indian chief. The area was historically occupied by the Muscogee Creek people. After the removal of the creek Indians in the 1830s, the area was settled by European Americans.
Lake Wedowee
Lake Wedowee, also known as R.L. Harris Reservoir, is a reservoir located in Randolph County on the upper part of the Tallapoosa River. The lake has an area of about 9,870 acres and was built as one of the last hydro sites in Alabama.
The lake was created by the flooding of the plains behind the R.L. Harris Dam which began construction around November 1, 1974 and was finally completed around April 20, 1983. These are two generating units that help produce up to 67,500 kilowatts of power of each unit.
There are so many recreational attractions on Lake Wedowee. One of these recreational attractions is Flat Rock Park. Sitting on over 25 acres of granite, this day-use park features swimming, picnicking, fishing, and a nature trail. Flat Rock Park has excellent access to beautiful Lake Wedowee.
