Roanoke is a beautiful city located in Randolph County, which is in the Piedmont region of Eastern Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population of Roanoke, Alabama was just 5,311 making this a quaint rural community in East Central Alabama.

Roanoke was occupied by the Creek Indians before the forced migration under the Indian Removal Act of 1830. It is not uncommon to find Native American artifacts including arrowheads, pottery, and directional trees throughout Randolph County, Alabama.

Roanoke was initially called “High Pine” in the 1830s after a nearby creek, still named High Pine Creek. Roanoke (High Pine) was allegedly burned during an Indian uprising in 1836. The town of Roanoke was incorporated by an Act of Legislature in December of 1890.

In 1901, Roanoke acquired its greatest economic profit when the W.A. Handley Manufacturing Company was built along with the Lowell Mill Village. The mill produced yarn, canvas, and fabric for 70+ years. The mill was the economic backbone of Roanoke for years.

The Roanoke City School System consist of Handley High School, Handley Middle School, and Knight-Enloe School. Around 1907, W.A. Handley gave land and buildings to the city which make up Roanoke City Schools.
